Different Types of Coffee Roasts

There are several different roasts of coffee beans available. Which ones will you order to serve your customers?

Many Americans rely on coffee, whether it’s grabbed to get through the morning commute, savored on a weekend morning, or enjoyed alongside a dessert. In fact, studies have found that over half of Americans over the age of 18 drink at least one cup of coffee per day. But the fact is that there are many different types of coffee, and the ones that are available to you can vary in flavor, color, roast, and caffeine content. With all these factors at play, it can seem intimidating to find just the right coffee for you! Luckily, we have you covered with some helpful information on the differences between common coffee roasts that you’ll find at your local market or favorite coffee shop. Here are some of the different types of coffee roasts.

Light Roast

Light roast coffees boast an especially high caffeine content, only being roasted to a temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Appearing light brown in color, light roast coffees will have a lighter-bodied flavor and will not have pronounced oil present on the beans or grounds. The flavor of a light roast can generally be described as toasted grain, featuring an acidic bite.

Medium Roast

Medium roast coffees are most commonly found in coffee shops as the house roast and will be readily available in any grocery store. These coffees are roasted to a temperature of 420 degrees Fahrenheit, with a bit less caffeine than a light roast. These roasts are so popular due to their balanced flavor and aroma.

Dark Roast

Dark roasts are a coffee lover’s coffee. Thanks to an especially full-bodied flavor, and usually a hint of spice, these are generally heavy and flavorful blends. They are roasted to a temperature of 445 degrees. Though they have a strong flavor, they have a low caffeine content, so they’re popular for dessert pairings and leisurely enjoyment.

Extra Dark

Extra dark roasts appear the darkest of available coffees. In fact, they’ll appear black and have a very low caffeine content. The flavor can be described as more smoky and bitter than typical coffees, so extra dark roasts aren’t usually used for an everyday roast.
